The Fourth of July is probably the most popular boating weekend of the year. It’s a wonderful time to have fun with family, celebrate our freedom, and go boating! If you are boating this 4th, whether that’s going to a waterfront restaurant, rafting up with friends, or anchoring to watch the fireworks… a little planning can make a world of difference between a perfect day and a stressful one. In this guide, we’ll cover how to plan your trip, prepare your boat, pack the essentials, and safely enjoy everything from your morning departure to the fireworks and ride home.
Make sure you download Argo and take the necessary time to prep. Here’s a good starting point to make this the best Fourth of July on the water yet.

Plan Your Trip Before the Holiday Rush
Start by deciding what kind of day you want. Are you heading to a waterfront restaurant, meeting friends at a sandbar, cruising to a fireworks show, or simply exploring somewhere new? Once you know your destination, you can plan the safest and most efficient route.
Before you head out, check the forecast for wind, rain, and lightning, and look for anything that could impact your trip. Then preview your route to identify shallow water, bridges, navigation hazards, and other potential obstacles. If you’re traveling somewhere with unreliable cell service, download offline charts so you’ll have access to your maps even without a signal.

Four Things to Do While Planning Your Trip

Before leaving the dock, here are four steps to make sure you have a fantastic day.
1. Check the Weather and Wind conditions in Argo
Summer weather can change in the blink of an eye; for this reason, it’s good to have a head start. Before leaving the dock, check Argo for wind, rain, and lightning that will be along your planned route.
Make sure to pay attention not only to the current weather, but also to what’s expected throughout the day. Afternoon storms can sneak up on you, and knowing what’s coming can make your day safer.
2. Download Offline Charts
Cell phone coverage can be spotty and unreliable once you are out on the water. Downloading charts with Argo before your trip starts means you’ll always have access to them even if your signal drops. It’s another way to make sure you are safe while out on the water.
3. Preview Your Route
Make sure you take the time to review your route before leaving. Look for shallow areas, hazards, currents, bridges, and anything else that could impact your trip. Having an understanding of what is on your route will help reduce mishaps and allow you to truly enjoy your trip.
4. Share your Float Plan.
Probably one of the most important things to do before heading out is making sure someone knows where you’re going and when you should be back. Whether you use Argo to share that or not, make sure someone is always aware of your plans.

Let’s talk Fourth of July Essentials

Once your boating plans are ready, it’s time to make sure you have all the necessities for a fun day on the water.
Holidays often mean longer days on the water with more people. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen to keep yourself and your loved ones comfortable.
Consider packing:
- Water and electrolyte drinks
- Fresh fruit and veggies
- Sandwiches
- Chips and snacks
- Plenty of ice
- Sunscreen
- Hats
- sunglasses
It’s always important to consider safety, too. Make sure you have these things onboard.
- Towels
- Dry clothes
- Phone chargers
- Waterproof bags
- First aid supplies
But remember, it’s a holiday weekend! Make sure you have fun essentials to make great memories.
Bring along:
- Floats
- Paddleboards
- Water toys
- Cameras for photos
- A good playlist
- Friends!
Let’s talk about the day…
Morning: Beat the Crowds
One of the easiest and simplest ways to improve your Fourth of July experience is to get out early. Getting ahead of peak traffic can help avoid long boat ramp lines, finding better anchorage, and reaching your destination before the areas get overcrowded.
Afternoon: Make the Most of Your Day
Once you are on the water, it’s time to relax and enjoy your day with loved ones. There’s so much you could do… Explore a new restaurant, find a new sandbar to meet new friends, and get some much-needed relaxing time. But remember, keep an eye on conditions. Monitor weather and hazards in your area at all times.
Evening: Fireworks and the Ride Home

For many people, fireworks are the best part of the day on the Fourth of July (myself included). Make sure to arrive early at popular firework viewing locations because they often fill up hours before sunset. Arriving early means you have options and gives you time to relax before the big show. When choosing a firework viewing spot, make sure to stay clear of navigation channels and leave a good space between you and other boats.
Prepare for the Ride Home
Before the show starts, make sure that your navigation lights are all working, your phone is charged with your route home ready, and everyone onboard knows the exit plan. Waterways can become crowded and harder to navigate once the show ends. Having a route planned ahead of time can make a world of difference in getting home safely and smoothly.
Enjoy the Holiday Safely
The best Fourth of July boat days aren’t always elaborate; they are the ones you plan ahead for. By downloading Argo and checking conditions, prepping a route, packing the essentials, and most importantly, sharing your plans with someone you trust… You’ll spend less time figuring things out on the water and more time enjoying your day with loved ones.
From all of us at Argo, have a safe and happy Fourth of July. Fair winds and happy boating.
