Traveling by water has a way of slowing time. The gentle movement of the boat, the sound of waves against the hull, and the freedom to explore at your own pace… it creates an intimacy you simply can’t find on land. Whether you’re cruising a tropical bay, docking at a historic harbor town, or anchoring for sunset in a quiet cove, boating changes a getaway into a shared experience.

With Argo, couples can confidently plan routes, navigate unfamiliar waters, and discover new destinations, making every romantic escape smoother and more memorable.

Below are 10 of the most romantic places to explore by water, each offering something unique for couples who love adventure, beauty, and time together on the water.

  1. Miami, Florida

Miami is where vibrant city energy meets warm coastal waters. Exploring Miami by boat allows couples to experience both sides of the city, from skyscrapers to quiet, palm-lined canals. A daytime cruise through Biscayne Bay offers views of celebrity waterfront homes, while evening boating brings glowing skyline reflections and tropical breezes.

Couples can anchor near sandbars during the day, then transition into a sunset cruise before docking for dinner at a waterfront restaurant. Miami’s nightlife feels especially romantic when you arrive by water, stepping off the boat straight into the heart of the city.

  1. Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Fajardo is a romantic gateway to some of Puerto Rico’s most breathtaking waters. From here, couples can easily boat to nearby islands like Icacos, Palomino, and Culebra, each offering powdery white sand and crystal-clear water. These islands feel private and untouched, making them ideal for couples seeking quiet moments together.

One of Fajardo’s most magical experiences happens after dark, when nearby bioluminescent bays glow with every movement, creating a surreal and unforgettable romantic memory. Some of the Argo crew were fortunate enough to experience this! It was beyond beautiful and magical.

Boating here means calm seas, scenic channels, and effortless access to waterfront restaurants and hidden sandbars.

Sunsets in Islamorada are legendary. Couples often anchor in shallow water, watch the sky shift through vibrant colors, then cruise back under a canopy of stars. The atmosphere feels intimate, relaxed, and undeniably romantic.

6. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston’s charm is amplified when experienced from the water. Cruising through Charleston Harbor reveals historic forts, elegant waterfront homes, and sweeping views of the city skyline. The slow pace and rich history create a romantic atmosphere unlike anywhere else.

Couples can dock near downtown, stroll cobblestone streets, and enjoy candlelit dinners before returning to the water for a moonlit cruise through tidal rivers and marshlands. Here’s a great spot for a romantic dinner while in town.

  1. Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May feels like stepping into a romantic seaside postcard. Victorian architecture, quiet beaches, and a charming harbor create a peaceful escape for couples. Arriving by boat adds a sense of nostalgia and adventure, especially during golden hour.

Couples can enjoy dolphin-watching cruises, peaceful mornings on the water, and cozy evenings docked near town. There are tons of unique spots within the town to roam around. One of my favorite spots is Cape May Peanut Butter CO.

8. San Francisco, California

Few boating experiences are as iconic as cruising beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco’s waterfront offers dramatic views, changing weather, and unforgettable scenery. Foggy mornings create a cinematic feel, while sunsets bathe the city in warm light.

Boating here feels adventurous and romantic all at once, especially when exploring quieter areas of the Bay away from the city’s bustle. Check out our boating guide to San Francisco for more helpful tips!

9. Monterey, California

Monterey offers a quieter, more introspective romance. Boating in Monterey Bay means close encounters with sea otters, seals, and seabirds, all set against a rugged coastal backdrop. The slower pace invites couples to truly unplug and enjoy the moment.

Personally, Monterey is one of my favorite places on earth. Exploring the bay together feels magical, making Monterey ideal for someone who wants a unique but intimate experience. Here’s my favorite spot to eat in the town.

  1. St. Michaels, Maryland

St. Michaels is one of the Chesapeake Bay’s most romantic harbor towns. Its calm waters, historic charm, and welcoming marinas make it a favorite for couples seeking a peaceful getaway. Fun fact: St. Michael’s is where Captain Jeff and Mrs. Argo got married! Mrs. Argo shared that they usually go to the Crab Claw restaurant, an old crab house right on the water,  where they had their rehearsal dinner. For some outdoor fun, they like playing golf at The Links at Perry Cabin and Hog Neck Golf Course. But what they really love is walking around town, exploring the shops, and strolling along the waterfront.
