The Nightmare Every Boater Knows

Every boater recognizes that exact feeling. You’ve had a perfect day out on the water, soaking up the summer sun with family, and your destination is finally in sight. Then comes the inevitable, stressful question: Where are we going to tie up for the night?

For most of us, finding overnight moorage can be a total headache, especially in popular spots during peak season. Meanwhile, countless private docks and mooring buoys sit completely empty. They’re right there, but until now, there just hasn’t been an easy, trusted way to ask the owners for permission to use them.

That exact gap is what inspired Darren to build OnBuoy.

Jeff Foulk and Darren Austin

A Tech Veteran Tackling the Water

Darren saw a straightforward problem with a ton of potential: boaters desperately needed more reliable places to stay, and waterfront property owners had unused space just sitting there. Why not build an app to connect the two?

His background practically custom-built him for the challenge. Darren has spent most of his career in tech, working with heavy hitters like Amazon, AOL, Expedia, and Microsoft to bring consumer products to mobile phones. Now, he’s channeling all that experience into OnBuoy, heading up product development, operations, partnerships, and growth.

But for Darren, OnBuoy isn’t just a tech play; it’s about solving a real friction point in a way that benefits everyone. Boaters get more options, property owners can monetize an asset they already own, and the environment wins, too, because better access to moorage means fewer anchors tearing up the seabed.

What’s New (And What They’ll Discuss Live)

Right now, the OnBuoy team is busy expanding into new markets, leveling up the host and guest experience, and doubling down on trust and safety tools. During the live, expect Darren to dive into some of their newest features… like a real-time check-in tool that allows members to report current availability at public moorages so other boaters can see if there’s space before they make the trip over.

For Darren, the core philosophy is simple: growth doesn’t always mean building something brand new from scratch. Sometimes, it’s just about being smarter with what we already have.

A Quick Look at the Founder Beyond the App: Outside of his day job, Darren is a builder through and through. He’s a history and science buff, a podcast enthusiast, and a massive dog lover (he and his wife rescue Boston Terriers). He’s also a natural tinkerer with a utility patent to his name for a quick-connect system that makes installing ceiling fans easier. He’s a guy who looks at everyday annoyances and builds fixes for them.

Argo Livestream

What to Expect on Thursday Night

When Argo invited Darren to join the conversation, it was an easy yes. Darren is a massive fan of the Argo team, and more than anything, he’s excited for the unscripted moments, the raw, honest insights that only happen when you get passionate creators talking naturally.

During the livestream, Darren hopes to challenge how people think about innovation. It doesn’t have to be flashy or futuristic. Sometimes, it’s as simple as noticing an underutilized resource, asking a better question, and building a trusted bridge between people.

Don’t forget to tune in Live: Thursday, June 11th at 7:00 PM EST!
